A. Art classes are often conducted by a teacher in a classroom setting, with the primary goal typically being to create something, following a particular expected method. In contrast, Art Therapy is led by a trained art therapist, where the primary aim is self-expression, and there is no right or wrong way to create art. Art therapy emphasises the process of making art rather than the finished product.
A. Sessions may include a mix of talking, creative activities (like drawing, painting, collage, or sculpture), and reflection. I am guided by what you want to do—there’s no set structure or pressure. You might feel like creating something one week and just talking the next. Each session is tailored to your needs, goals, and comfort level. You're in the driver’s seat, and I’ll support you in whatever way feels right for you in that moment.
A. If you’re seeking a creative, non-verbal, and person-centred approach to exploring emotions, challenges, or experiences, art therapy could be an excellent fit for you. To help you decide, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation where we can briefly discuss your needs and questions. In our initial full session, we will delve into your expectations, therapy goals, and what you hope to gain from the process. This allows us both to determine if we’re a good match before proceeding further.
A. Your artwork is treated with the same confidentiality as any other information shared during therapy. It will only be seen by you and your therapist, unless you choose to share it with others. You always remain in control of your creative work—there is no expectation to display or explain it unless you want to.
Like all therapeutic work, confidentiality is protected and respected. The only time information (including artwork) may be disclosed is if required by law, such as in cases involving concerns about your safety or the safety of others.
A. Art therapy is not currently covered under Medicare Mental Health Care Plans. However, it can be funded through the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) and some private health insurance policies if your plan includes counselling supports. I’m happy to help you or your support coordinator understand your options.
